Drug Intervention Information: Cocaine
The use of alcohol and cocaine together are the most common combination of drugs resulting in death. Together, alcohol and cocaine produce coca ethylene, which is more powerful, toxic and longer lasting than either drug by itself, a synergistic effect.

Cocaine primarily functions within the pleasure centers of the brain. It acts like prescription antidepressants. It prohibits the reuptake of dopamine, much like Prozac or other SRIs (Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) that inhibit the reuptake of serotonin in the connective region between nerve cells called the synapse. The sought after effects of cocaine are fast acting and very powerful. Cocaine users experience euphoria, intense pleasure in ordinary activities, heightened sensitivity and attraction to ordinary pleasurable activities, such as sex.  Users report a feeling that is perceived as “better” than the feeling that a user can feel without the drug. Because of this immediate, powerful and “positive” effect and gradual short-term side effects, cocaine is an extremely attractive drug to use. However, the user will quickly develop tolerance for the current dose, and will have to keep taking an increased amount of cocaine for the same effect. Long-term cocaine use can be terminal.

Abuse
Abuse of cocaine means the “self-inflicted mistreatment, damage or injury to oneself with cocaine.” This damage includes the physical as well as social and financial effects on this person. The far-reaching destruction will reach friends, family, co-workers and others in the social sphere of the addict. People in the cocaine addict’s life can become victims, but are often enablers of the behavior, by allowing it to continue.

Addiction and Dependency
Cocaine dependency is when the body develops both a physical and a psychological need for cocaine. Other symptoms often present are increased tolerance as well as withdrawal. The addict often times wants to rid him or herself of their addiction, but without professional help a premature death is more probable.
