Drug Intervention Information: Crack Cocaine
Inhaled cocaine is absorbed almost immediately into the bloodstream. It only takes seconds to reach the brain. This immediate, ultra stimulation of the brain’s pleasure centers is highly pleasurable and addictive. The intense stimulation of the brains pleasure center results in an equally painful void left in the brain after eliminating the drug from the body. Primary elimination happens within about thirty-minutes. The perceived “positive rush” of crack is so great, and the feeling of coming down from crack so negative, the user is compelled to acquire more crack cocaine at whatever cost. Long-term crack use can result in death.

Abuse
Abuse of crack cocaine means the “self-inflicted maltreatment, injury or damage to oneself with crack cocaine.” This damage includes the physical as well as social and financial effects on this person. The far-reaching destruction will reach friends, family, co-workers and others in the social sphere of the addict. People in the crack addict’s life can become victims, but are often enablers of the behavior, by allowing it to continue.

Addiction and Dependency
Crack cocaine dependency is when the body develops both a physical and a psychological need for crack cocaine. Other symptoms often present are increased tolerance as well as withdrawal. The addict often times wants to rid him or herself of the addiction, but without professional help, a premature death is more probable.
