Drug Intervention Information: Crystal Meth
Of all the stimulant drugs known to man, methamphetamine is the strongest. Meth has been around since before World War ll and was used by the Germans and the Japanese in the war.  Methamphetamine is speed: a stimulant that promotes excitation and stimulation almost unilaterally throughout the body. Crystal meth is a more powerful and concentrated version of the principal psychoactive compound; amphetamine. Crystal meth users frequently stay awake for days and often use alcohol and other depressants to regulate their mood swings. Meth users easily become volatile and are usually extremely paranoid. One dose of crystal meth can result in an entire month of side effects and symptoms related to the drug presence and withdrawal. Crystal meth can be injected, snorted, smoked or taken orally. Because of its highly addictive nature and severe side effects crystal meth users can be predatory and very dangerous. Crystal meth is a killer!

Abuse
Abuse of crystal meth means the “self-inflicted maltreatment, injury or damage to oneself with crystal meth.” This damage includes the physical as well as social and financial effects on this person. The far-reaching destruction will reach friends, family, co-workers and others in the social sphere of the addict. People in the crystal meth addicts’ life can become victims, but are often enablers of the behavior, by allowing it to continue.

Addiction and Dependency
Crystal meth dependency is when the body develops both a physical and psychological need for crystal meth. Other symptoms often present are increased tolerance as well as withdrawal. The addict often times wants to rid him or herself of their addiction, but without professional help, a premature death is more probable.
