Drug Intervention Information: Marijuana
A central nervous system depressant, marijuana is the most commonly abused illicit drug in the United States. Cannabis sativa is a naturally occurring plant that produces THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) the psychoactive entity in marijuana. Its tips or buds are harvested, dried and usually smoked. However, users can also ingest marijuana. The sticky resin in the buds can be transformed into hashish, a highly concentrated and potent form of THC. It creates a calming state with increased sensitivity to touch, smell and taste. Users report a perceived increase of creativity when using marijuana. Marijuana has not been found to produce chemical or physical dependency. With hydroponics technology marijuana potency has become greatly exaggerated.
Abuse
Abuse of marijuana means the “self-inflicted maltreatment, injury or damage to oneself with marijuana.” This damage includes the physical as well as social and financial effects on this person. The far-reaching destruction will reach friends, family, co-workers and others in the social sphere of the addict. People in the addict’s life can become victims, but are often enablers of the behavior, by allowing it to continue.
Addiction and Dependency
Marijuana dependency is when the body develops a psychological need for marijuana. Other symptoms often present are increased tolerance as well as withdrawal. The addict often times wants to rid him or herself of their addiction, but without professional help, a premature death is more probable.
